Page B. Pennell, MD, is Director of the Emory Womens Epilepsy Program. She is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and is Director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit of Emory University Hospital.
Dr. Pennell received her medical degree from the University of Florida. She completed her Neurology residency and a specialized fellowship in Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After fellowship, Dr. Pennell moved to Atlanta to join the faculty of Emory University.
The focus of Dr. Pennells research includes pregnancy in women with epilepsy and the effects of sex steroid hormones on seizures. Projects include studying the hormonal basis for catamenial epilepsy (seizure worsening associated with menstrual periods), treatment trials for catamenial epilepsy, and studies of medication effects during pregnancy in women with epilepsy. Other areas of research include neurochemical markers and imaging in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, and investigational drug, device, and surgical trials for medically refractory epilepsy.
Dr. Pennell has given numerous professional presentations, and she is a member of several professional neurology and epilepsy organizations. She holds offices in the Womens Issues in Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology, the Issues of Concern for Women with Epilepsy Section of the American Epilepsy Society, and the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America.
