Zachary N. Stowe, MD, is Director of the Women�s Mental Health Program at Emory University. Dr. Stowe is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and an Assistant Professor in Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed his residency in psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center. After completing a fellowship in psychopharmacology at Emory, Dr. Stowe established the Women�s Mental Health Program. The focus Dr. Stowe�s clinical research is the use of psychotropic medications during pregnancy and lactation, the psychobiology of mood disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and the impact of maternal mental illness on fetal and neonatal exposures. In addition, he leads an active laboratory research involving stress and medication in rodents with differing behavioral paradigms and/or altered metabolic capacity (e.g. enzymes, binding proteins).

Dr. Stowe has given numerous professional presentations, is a member of including a special conference on women�s mental health at the National Institute of Mental Health. He has received a number of honors and awards including the Gerald L. Klerman Young Investigator Award from the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association and the American Psychiatric Association/SmithKline Beecham Young Faculty Award. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill and is a member of NIH study section.

D. Jeffrey Newport is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Emory University School of Medicine. He serves as Associate Director of the Emory Women�s Mental Health Program.

Dr. Newport completed a graduate theological degree prior to medical school and then received his medical degree from the University of South Carolina. He subsequently completed both a general psychiatry residency and a master�s degree in clinical research at Emory. He has received numerous awards including the Young Faculty Award from the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education, Young Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, Lilly Fellowship from the Society of Biological Psychiatry, Laughlin Fellowship from the American College of Psychiatrists, Hoechst Marion Roussel Award from the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Lilly Psychiatric Research Fellowship from the American Psychiatric Association, and Pfizer Psychiatry Resident of the Year Award.

Dr. Newport�s research focuses on clinical and preclinical studies of women�s mental health with a particular emphasis on the psychobiology of psychiatric illness during pregnancy and the postpartum, the pharmacokinetics of psychotropic medication during pregnancy and lactation, and the persistent neuroendocrine and behavioral impact of early life adverse experiences.

Dr. Newport has numerous reports relevant to women�s mental health published in journals including JAMA, the American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, Neurology, and the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. He has given numerous professional presentations at multiple venues including the annual meetings of the American Psychiatric Association, American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology, North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics & Gynecology, and European College of Neuropsychopharmacology.

Page B. Pennell, MD, is Director of the Emory Women's Epilepsy Program. She is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and is Director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit of Emory University Hospital and Associate Director of the Emory Epilepsy Center.

Dr. Pennell received her medical degree from the University of Florida. She completed her Neurology residency and a specialized fellowship in Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After fellowship, Dr. Pennell moved to Atlanta to join the faculty of Emory University.

The focus of Dr. Pennell�s research includes pregnancy in women with epilepsy and the effects of sex steroid hormones on seizures. Projects include studying the hormonal basis for catamenial epilepsy (seizure worsening associated with menstrual periods), treatment trials for catamenial epilepsy, and studies of medication effects during pregnancy in women with epilepsy. Other areas of research include neurochemical markers and imaging in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, and investigational drug, device, and surgical trials for medically refractory epilepsy.

Dr. Pennell has given numerous professional presentations, and she is a member of several professional neurology and epilepsy organizations. She holds offices in the Women�s Issues in Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology, the Issues of Concern for Women with Epilepsy Section of the American Epilepsy Society, and the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America.




Michael J. Owens, Ph.D.

Dr. Owens received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Duke University in 1990. He joined the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke for 18 months prior to being recruited to Emory University in December 1991. He is a member of both the Molecular & Systems Pharmacology and Neuroscience training programs in the graduate school at Emory University. Dr. Owens has received a number of scientific awards and honors including 1st prize at the National Student Research Forum, a Mead-Johnson award from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the Rafaelsen Scholar award form the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP). He is a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the Society of Biological Psychiatry, the Society for Neuroscience, and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. His research interests center upon the long-term molecular and cellular mechanisms of antidepressant, anti-anxiety, and antipsychotic drugs, particularly as they relate to neuropeptide transmitter systems. He is a regular reviewer for the journals: Neuropsychopharmacology, Biological Psychiatry, the American Journal of Psychiatry, the Journal of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, Molecular Pharmacology, Endocrinology, and the Journal of Neuroscience. Dr. Owens has published over 130 research articles and reviews.




Toby Goldsmith, M.D.

Toby Goldsmith, M.D. has been active in the mental health care of women since 1995. From 1996 to 1999, Dr. Goldsmith was the director of the Women's Mental Health Program at the University of Cincinnati, and continued in a similar position at the University of Florida from 1999 to 2005. She joined the Emory Women's Mental Health Program in 2006.

Dr. Goldsmith was raised and educated in New York, where she attended Cornell University. In 1991, Dr. Goldsmith received her medical degree magna cum laude from the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the State University of New York at Buffalo. At graduation, Dr. Goldsmith was awarded the Gilbert M. Beck Memorial Prize in Psychiatry and the Janet M. Glasgow Award for Women in Medicine. At Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Goldsmith completed her residency in adult psychiatry. She served as chief resident from 1994-1995. She was the recipient of the 1995 Marc Hollander Award for Outstanding Performance as a Psychiatry Resident.

While Dr. Goldsmith has been involved in psychiatric research throughout her career, she is primarily invested in the clinical care of women, as well as educating others about psychiatric illness. She has taught medical students, residents and fellow physicians and was given the The Golden Apple for Excellence in Psychiatric Residency Education at the University of Cincinnati. She has also spoken at symposia for women, including Speaking of Women's Health.

Dr. Goldsmith's primary clinical interest is in the treatment of mood disorders in pregnant and postpartum women. She has also been active in the care of patients with obesity and Parkinson's disease.




Stephanie Winn, M.D.

Stephanie Winn, M.D. is a board-certified psychiatrist at Emory University with the Women's Mental Health Program. Dr. Winn completed medical school at the Medical School of Georgia and completed her residency in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Emory. She has worked as a psychiatrist with particular interest in women's issues. Dr. Winn practiced in Carrollton, GA for six years prior to joining the Emory faculty in 2003.
